Moji Oluwa Interview

Could   you   tell   us   a   bit   about   yourself   and   how   you   started   training?

I grew up as a skinny kid in Lagos, Nigeria. At the age of 8, I saw the movie “Pumping Iron” and that inspired me to want to build my body like the bodybuilders in the movie. I did not know the difference between bodybuilding and weightlifting. So one day at the age of 13 as I walked past a gym I saw guys lifting weights and walked in and that is where it all began for me. I thought I was training to be a bodybuilder like Arnold but soon realized we did not have bodybuilding and I was training to be an olympic weightlifter.  In 1994 I won 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, I was on the Nigerian Olympic Weightlifting Team. After the 1996 Olympics, I had accomplished my goals and decided I wanted to go into bodybuilding which was my first love. I started my first competition in 1997 and won my class.

How   do   you   stay   motivated?

I stay motivated because where I grew up, we did not have proper equipments. I came from a third world country  where we had nothing. I wanted to make something of my life and reach my goals. I knew the only country I could do that in would be the United States and that is why I made this my home. I am thankful for the opportunity I have been  given and I never forget where I came from and how I struggled and worked hard to get where I am. I also want to make people of my country aware of what they can do with their life and to strive for what you believe in. I do this especially for the young athletes in Nigeria.
